Barbara Boggs Sigmund
Sigmund is the daughter of Congressman Hale Boggs and Congresswoman & Ambassador Lindy Boggs. In 1972 she was elected to the Princeton, NJ Borough Council. In 1975 she was elected to the Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders. As a county official, she led the efforts to establish one of the first shelters for battered women in New Jersey. During a 1982 run for the U.S. Senate, cancer of the eye was detected. Sigmund was elected Mayor of Princeton in 1983 and again in 1987. In 1989 she was runner-up in the Democratic primary for Governor. That year, her cancer returned, but she served as Mayor until her death in October of 1990.
