Charlton Lyons, Sr.

Charlton Lyons is best known for his path breaking gubernatorial campaign of 1964 in which he posted billboards that stated “Everybody Can Vote for Charlton Lyons” to inform De mocratic voters that they actually had a choice in the general election. He is often considered the “father of the modern Republican Party in Louisiana” and the “Grand Old Man of the Republican Party,” who kept the GOP alive in Louisiana during the long years of Democratic sovereignty in the state. Mr. Lyons held virtually every position on the GOP State Central Committee at one time or another. President Nixon appointed Mr. Lyons to the La. State Advisory Committee on Public Education in 1970.
