James R. Engster

James R. Engster, a notable Louisiana journalist and radio host, serves as the owner and president of the Louisiana Radio Network (LRN), gaining recognition for his engaging show, “Talk Louisiana,” on WRKF, Baton Rouge’s NPR affiliate. An LSU graduate, he was inducted into the LSU Manship School Hall of Fame in 2012 and the LSU Hall of Distinction in 2018.


Engster’s extensive radio career began at Louisiana Network, where he served as a reporter and news director from 1983 to 1998. He hosted the renowned call-in show, “Louisiana Live,” and managed WRKF before acquiring and renaming Louisiana Network to LRN. His show, “The Jim Engster Show,” aired on various platforms.


In sports journalism, Engster made a mark as president of Tiger Rag Magazine, acquired by LRN in 2000. His column, “Statistically Speaking,” earned him recognition as Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Communicator of the Year in 2018.


His contributions garnered accolades, including Communicator of the Year by the Public Relations Association of Louisiana in 2008 and the Racial Justice Award from the YWCA Greater Baton Rouge in 2011. Engster’s commitment to media is evident in his ten terms as president of the Press Club of Baton Rouge and his current role as chairman of the LSU Media Board.


Presently, Engster is the president of the National Association of State Radio Networks, representing thirty-two states and over 1,500 radio stations. His multifaceted career and ongoing dedication to the media highlight his lasting impact.
