Kathleen Babineaux Blanco
Kathleen Blanco became the first woman Governor of Louisiana on January 12, 2004. Before she was elected governor Blanco was Lt. Governor for two terms; under her leadership as Lt. Governor tourism in La. Increased by 41 %. Blanco began her career as a public servant in 1984, when she became the first woman ever elected to represent the people of Lafayette in the State Legislature. Five years later she was elected to the Public Service Commission, where she later became the first woman to serve as Commissioner and, later, as the first woman to chair the Commission (1993-1994).
