Rose McConnell Long
Mrs. Long was Louisiana’s first woman U.S. Senator and the second woman in U.S. history ever elected Senator. After Huey P. Long was assassinated she was appointed to fill his senate seat until a special election could be held three months later. She was elected to retain the seat in Congress and served until 1937. As Senator, she represented Louisiana with diligence, intelligence and grace.
